Report: Newcastle eye 93-cap Champions League winner as PIF look to make statement
Newcastle United could make a move for Champions League winning goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, according to reports in Spain this weekend.
Estadio Deportivo claim that Navas is among a number of targets that the new Newcastle owners could move for. Navas, 34, has been shunted down the pecking order after the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.
However, he is an experienced goalkeeper who is highly thought of across Europe. His spell with Real Madrid yielded success, with three European Cups to his name. Navas also has 93 caps for his country, Costa Rica.
Newcastle fans are still on cloud nine after being taken over by Amanda Staveley’s PIF-backed consortium this week. Since the news, a whole host of players have been linked with moves to St James’ Park.
And while a goalkeeper might not be the main focus given Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka’s presence, Navas is certainly a top ‘keeper.
Navas made his name in Spain with Levante, before eventually moving to Real and taking Iker Casillas’ place as number one.
TBR’s View: Navas a good, if not essential, Newcastle signing
A goalkeeper is probably the last position Newcastle really need to add someone to really. Well, urgently anyway.
Darlow and Dubravka are good goalkeepers in their own rights. Navas, while being a quality operator, is 34, and would only surely be a stop-gap type signing.
So while he’d no doubt bring that experience and winning mentality to the northeast, there’s other, more pressing issues for the club to address when it comes to the squad.
