Newcastle United could make a move to take Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal during the final days of the January transfer window, according to a report from the Daily Mirror (30/1; page 61).

The Magpies are yet to make a first-team signing in this window. But with Steve Bruce’s side only just ending a lengthy run without a win, it would be a gamble to let the deadline pass without strengthening.

Hamza Choudhury has been linked with a move to Tyneside. But the report has suggested that a potential loan deal for the Leicester City man is in doubt.

According to the Daily Mirror (30/1; page 61), Newcastle could turn their attention to Willock. The report suggests that Arsenal could be ready to let the 21-year-old leave to get game-time.

There have been flashes of Willock’s quality this season. Mikel Arteta suggested that he has special qualities back in November (via The Sun).

But those moments of brilliance have largely come in the Europa League where he has scored three and contributed three assists.

He has made just two starts in the top flight this term. So a move would still be something of a risk for the Magpies.

For Arsenal, loaning Willock to Newcastle could make a lot of sense. He now needs to go away and play regularly, proving that he can make an impact at the highest level.

And joining a club of Newcastle’s stature could be perfect as he looks to catch the Gunners’ eye.
