According to reports this weekend, Newcastle United are now firm contenders to try and sign Fiorentina striker, Dusan Vlahovic, in the January transfer window.

The Sun reports that Newcastle have now joined the race for Vlahovic, who has been tracked by Tottenham ever since the summer window.

The Sun claims that PIF see Vlahovic as someone who could demonstrate that they mean business to the Newcastle fans. The Serbian striker is seen as one of the best young strikers in Europe, and hit 21 goals last season in Serie A.

Vlahovic, though, won’t come cheap. Reports in the summer claimed La Viola wanted around £77m for their man. And while his lack of new contract means a smaller fee is more likely, Newcastle will still need to stump up around £35m it is expected.

Newcastle’s new owners are currently planning for the January transfer window. They are not expected to spend huge amounts. However, reports today suggest they could be tempted with a marquee signing, if the right player becomes available.

TBR’s View: Vlahovic the new Shearer for Newcastle?

It could certainly be viewed that way. Vlahovic is one of the very best strikers in Europe and if the Magpies landed him, it would send a big message.

He is pure class. Lethal in front of goal and young enough to keep on getting even better. Vlahovic is the real deal.

Newcastle do need a top goalscorer. They are the players who win you games and bring the money in. So, if they can indeed get their hands on Vlahovic, then it will be quite the coup.
