Report: Newcastle join Tottenham in race to sign £45m player from Pochettino
CalcioMercato report that Newcastle have joined Tottenham and Juventus in the race to sign PSG striker Mauro Icardi from Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG.
Icardi, 28, has seen his game time reduce at PSG – following the signing of Lionel Messi on a free. He has started just four of nine league games.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have finally completed a £300million takeover. Mike Ashley has sold up, with a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium coming in.
The PIF will own 80%, while the face of the enterprise – Amanda Staveley – will own 10%. The Reuben Brothers will occupy the other 10%.
They have money to spend. It is believed the PIF is worth £320billion – around 10 times that of Manchester City. An incredible amount of money.
Of course, it has sent Newcastle fans into meltdown. Numerous players are already being linked, and the latest is that of Argentina international Icardi.
Newcastle eye Icardi: Toon a good move, or is Tottenham better?
Of the three clubs said to be after the £45million PSG signing (Sun), obviously Juventus is the move that appeals to Icardi most.
Having played in Serie A and sparkled with Inter in the past, he is likely to prefer returning there – than a move to Spurs or Newcastle.
Currently, Spurs are only in the Conference League and Newcastle are miles off European qualification. But the financial aspect could be tempting.
Newcastle might appeal to Icardi in terms of wages, while Spurs could be tempting if Harry Kane goes. But Juventus is surely Icardi’s best option.
