The Express has claimed that Newcastle United are also interested in signing Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir – with Liverpool, Tottenham and Sheffield United previously linked with the Turkish ace.
Cakir, 24, has been in excellent form for Trabzonspor but has only managed to keep four clean sheets in 33 appearances for the SuperLig leaders. Now a fully-fledged Turkey international, Cakir is being linked with a big-money move.
Liverpool and Tottenham have been repeatedly linked in Turkish media for Cakir, with the Express stating that the two clubs are indeed interested. But the report also suggests Newcastle are in considering a move for the Turkish stopper.
It is likely to cost an eight-figure fee to secure the services of Cakir in the coming months, with a move supposedly on the horizon. Turkish journalist Serdar Ali Celikler has been quoted by the Express as saying Liverpool have made a bid.
“I’ve made some calls with my Trabzonspor sources. I can confirm that Liverpool have made a bid for Ugurcan Cakir, which is worth €25m (£22m),” Celikler said, initially on on VOLE’s Youtube channel.
TBR’s view – Martin Dubravka one of the Toon’s best players
If Newcastle are to finally confirm a takeover, there are likely to be an influx of players. It begs the question, who will be signed and therefore, who will be replaced by new recruits in the starting line-up.
Dubravka is one of the club’s best players. Newcastle need a left-back, a right-back, central midfielders, a playmaker and most definitely a striker. But certainly, they do not need a goalkeeper. A move for Cakir, then, should only occur if Dubravka leaves.
