Report: Newcastle interested in signing Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey

The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle United are interested in signing Norwich City centre-back Ben Godfrey this summer, with the Canaries looking more than likely to be relegated from the Premier League.

Godfrey, 22, has played in 25 of Norwich’s 33 Premier League games this season – even captaining Daniel Farke’s side on two occasions. He is one of a number of Norwich players to have caught the eye.

Along with Jamal Lewis, Max Aarons, Todd Cantwell and Emi Buendia, Godfrey is one that is now expected to leave should Norwich go down – as expected. The Mail’s report claims he is one of four players eyed by Newcastle.

Roma striker Patrik Schick, Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis and free agent Arnaud Lusamba are also targets – the latter being released by Nice. The Sun suggest Newcastle will have competition for Godfrey.

Indeed, The Sun report claims Tottenham, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are all keen – and will cost a whopping £25million. Now, Newcastle are interested – as per the Mail.

TBR’s view – Bad news for Clark and Lejeune?

Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez and even Fabian Schar are all safe should a takeover occur this summer. But if the club’s new owners do go after a new centre-back such as Godfrey, room will have to be made.

The Toon boast five first-team central defenders with Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune making up the numbers. Clark has impressed at times but is some way down the pecking order, while injury continues to frustrate Lejeune.

If a centre-back is signed this summer, surely Clark and Lejeune will leave?
