Newcastle have struggled for goals this season, and Steve Bruce is reportedly targeting former Premier League forward Ryan Babel. The Dutchman has spent time at both Liverpool and Fulham and could be on his way back to England.
The Daily Mail reports that the Magpies have made initial contact with the Turkish club regarding a transfer. Ajax are also interested in bringing Babel in, so Newcastle may find it difficult to secure his signature.
Newcastle have scored the third-fewest goals in the Premier League this season and need some more firepower going into the second half of the season. The likes of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron have struggled to make an impact in terms of goalscoring this season. The pair have just two between them this season.
Babel would no doubt bring an additional goal threat to the Magpies attack. The 32-year-old has scored five goals in 15 Super Lig games and has proven his goalscoring capabilities in the past.
During his spell with Fulham last season, the Dutch forward managed five goals for the club and was a bright spark in a side who were relegated back to the Championship. Newcastle will want to avoid the same fate and manager Steve Bruce feels Babel will help achieve survival this season.
Convincing him to join the club could prove difficult, however. Babel started his career at Ajax and made over 100 appearances for them. It will be interesting to see if those at Newcastle can convince him to come back to the Premier League for a third time.
