The Daily Mirror have claimed that Newcastle United are interested in signing midfielder Jeff Hendrick this summer, with the report also claiming that the Irishman has left Burnley on a free transfer.

Hendrick, 28, is set to see his contract at Burnley expire on June 30 and clubs had until June 23 to agree extensions for out-of-contract players and loanees until the end of the season.

Burnley have announced that Joe Hart will leave the club at the end of his contract, but reports claim Phil Bardsley has agreed a one-year deal. Nothing has been said about Hendrick and winger Aaron Lennon.

But the Mirror claim former Derby County star Hendrick is set to become a free agent, and Newcastle are interested in offering the 54-time Ireland international a new home in the coming months.

TBR’s view – Hendrick a good addition, even with takeover

Hendrick has enormous experience in the Premier League, having clocked up 122 appearances in England’s top flight. Not only that, but he has more than 350 outings with Burnley and Derby – and more than 50 caps for Ireland.

Capable of scoring goals at this level, and still a decent age, Hendrick is an established central midfielder in his peak. On a free, then, he is an excellent signing and one Newcastle must take up – even with a takeover.
