Lille striker Victor Osimhen is on Newcastle United’s radar, according to The Chronicle.
Newcastle are planning to add more firepower to their striker ranks after scoring just five goals in the opening nine games. Osimhen has scored more goals than Newcastle this season so he is an option for the future.
The 20-year-old joined Lille from Charleroi and The Chronicle reports that he cost £10.8m. His price would have shot up now as he has started the season brightly for Lille and he has a contract until 2024.
Osimhen was tasked with replacing Rafael Leao for the Ligue 1 side. But he was not fazed by this task. He has already scored eight goals in 12 matches for his new club, including one goal in the Champions League.
The six-cap Nigeria international scored 20 times in 36 games for Belgian side Charleroi before his move. With Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle scoring one goal between them this season, a move to Osimhen could be on the cards.
Steve Bruce has obviously identified the striker department as one that needs urgent attention. Having lost Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon from last season, Newcastle’s new options have not been able to make an impact yet.
Joelinton has just one goal and he is struggling to adapt to English football. Carroll and Gayle have had injury concerns and judging by their past, this could be an ongoing issue. Osimhen is a proven goalscorer but he also lacks experience in England and he would probably be expensive.
