Newcastle United are interested in signing Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager with the Italian set to leave Napoli at the end of this season.

According to Calciomercato.it, the former AC Milan man is being courted by the Geordies and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are also interested in appointing the 43-year-old.

However, the Midlands outfit’s interest is thought to have already been consolidated due to the fact Gattuso’s agent is Jorge Mendes.

On the other hand, the north-east outfit’s chase for the manager is thought to be relatively new with the club having held talks just yesterday.

Steve Bruce has been under enormous pressure this season with Newcastle having been fighting a relegation battle in the Premier League. Reports earlier in the campaign claimed the 60-year-old had fallen out with members of the first-team squad after a string of bad results.

But, the club seem to have steered clear of the drop, sitting nine points clear of 18th placed Fulham with just four games left in the season.

With everything that has gone on with the team this year, it would seem silly to retain Bruce as manager after what can only be described as an abysmal season.

With the talent on offer to the former Sunderland manager, finishing 17th proves an incredible achievement. The proves to be stacked with a high level of quality, begging the question, how are the side so low?

Callum Wilson and Joe Willock have shown of their goalscoring prowess in the final third, whilst Allan Saint-Maximin has proven a handful for opposition defences in his limited appearances.

And in Gattuso, the outfit would be hiring a high level manager, who has proven pedigree in top-flight football after winning the Italian Cup over Juventus last season.

After such a dismal season, it would be quite stunning to see the club continue with Bruce at the helm after his underwhelming results with such a talented squad of players, especially with Gattuso potentially waiting in the wings to take over.
