Report: Newcastle in talks to sign Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam

French website Le Buteur have claimed that Newcastle United have opened talks to sign Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam on loan until the end of the season – with the experienced defender out of favour under Gennaro Gattuso.

Ghoulam, 29, has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Napoli – and is out of favour, too. This season, the 37-time Algeria international has managed just four starts this season, despite clocking up 12 appearances.

The left-back has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs over the past few years as he closes in on 200 Napoli appearances – with Chelsea still ‘convinced’ by the African man. But Newcastle have come calling.

The Toon have been linked with a move for Ghoulam, opening talks and making an enquiry to land the defender. Newcastle have options at left-back in Paul Dummett, Jamal Lewis and Matt Ritchie.

TBR’s view – Despite the options, Newcastle do need a left-back

That is because new signing Lewis is currently injured and is still learning the ropes, while Ritchie is naturally a winger and is certainly better in that position. Dummett is a steady left-back, but probably Championship quality.

Ghoulam is a big-name player and would be a top addition for Newcastle, if they can beat Chelsea. A permanent clause could also be included – Football Italia reporting Napoli were willing to sell for £13.5million in the summer.

He also has a release clause in his contract, as per the report, worth £31million.
