Newcastle Untied have reportedly joined the pursuit for defender Wilfried Kanon from Eredivisie club Den Haag.

According to the Sun, the Magpies will battle Leicester City and Southampton for the enforcer at the Dutch top-flight club.

It is understood that Den Haag are resigned to losing the centre-back for £3million amid huge interest in him this summer.

The report details that Schalke, Wolfsburg, Mainz, Real Betis and Getafe are all keen on the 25-year-old too.

Kanon helped Den Haag to a mid-table finish in the Eredivisie table this season, making 31 appearances across all competitions and impressing for them.

He is a powerhouse centre-back that has built up a strong reputation in Holland and it will be interesting to see if he could make the step up to the Premier League.

The 34-time capped Ivory Coast international is now entering the peak years of his career and £3million is a potential steal for one club.

TBR’s View:

Kanon looks like he’s worth the punt at just £3million this summer and has the physical strengths to succeed in the Premier League, while his international experience would come in handy too.

But more defensive recruitments is not needed at St James’ Park right now and they need to look at more attacking options.

Newcastle fans are waiting to hear news about Rafael Benitez’s future before getting too caught up in transfer speculation and they need to try reach an agreement with him quickly.
