Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has claimed on his website that Newcastle United are in pole position to sign Inter Milan winger Valentino Lazaro, despite the Austrian being linked with West Ham United earlier this week.
Lazaro, 23, only joined Inter from German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin in the summer for £20million (Goal) but is already being linked with a move. He earned a transfer to Inter, after having a hand in 10 goals during 2018-19 for Hertha.
The 28-time Austria international, who can on both sides of the defence or on either wing, was said to be interesting West Ham earlier this week. It is believed that West Ham made an enquiry for the Inter star, as per FC Inter News.
But the latest report now states that Newcastle are in pole position to sign the former RedBull Salzburg man, with his versatility likely to be a key factor in clubs pursuing the Austrian. Whether Newcastle can do a deal remains to be seen.
TBR’s view – The perfect January signing for Newcastle
If you are Steve Bruce, you need players that can cover multiple positions. A number of areas of the squad need filling, while some senior members are struggling to provide their best form as The Toon look to avoid the drop.
With Lazaro said to be available, landing the Austrian on a loan-to-buy deal would give Newcastle cover on both sides of the defence and on both flanks. It would also give The Toon the flexibility over whether to spend big, or not, if he flops.
