Report: Newcastle have set their sights on £40m player Jurgen Klopp has deemed 'sensational'

Newcastle United have set their sights on Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, according to Sky Sports.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe is reportedly keen on bolstering his goalkeeping options this summer.

Newcastle currently have the impressive Martin Dubravka as first-choice.

However, Freddie Woodman is reportedly closing in on a move to Preston North End.

And if Howe brought in someone to compete with Dubravka, Karl Darlow might not want to stick around as third-choice.

So there could be some movement in Newcastle’s goalkeeping ranks this summer.

And Sky Sports reckons the Magpies are keen on Pope, whose club will compete in the Championship next term.

The 30-year-old reportedly wants to remain in the top flight with an eye on the England squad for the World Cup.

Given Burnley are no longer in the top flight, it remains to be seen how much they’d want for Pope.

In May, it was reported that the Clarets want £40million for the 6ft 5in stopper – whether they stayed in the Premier League or not.

Pope’s contract expires in 2023 but Burnley have an option for a further year.

Newcastle have reportedly been eyeing Manchester United’s Dean Henderson too.

However, he seems to be closing in on a loan move to Nottingham Forest.

“Properly warm”

Pope would be a great shout for Newcastle, a talented and experienced keeper who could challenge Dubravka for a starting spot.

Pope kept nine clean sheets in the Premier League last season, 11 in 2020-21 and a staggering 15 shutouts in 2019-20.

In July 2020, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp waxed lyrical about the keeper after a 1-1 draw between the two sides.

“Nick Pope was obviously warmed up,” he said, as quoted by talkSPORT.

“We warmed him up through the game and he was properly warm and had some really sensational saves.”
