Newcastle United have held talks with Chelsea over signing Conor Gallagher from them, the Northern Echo say.
Making their move
Newcastle are eager to top up their midfield ranks this summer, especially with Jonjo Shelvey potentially missing the start of the season through injury.
Gallagher has now cropped up on their radar, with Newcastle making their first move to sign the combative 21-year-old recently.
The Magpies want to take him on loan, and Chelsea are said to be believe that the move could be beneficial to them too.
Mutually beneficial?
If Gallagher does impress at Newcastle his value will only rise, and he could even come back to fight for a place at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle could, therefore, struggle to make the move permanent if it goes well – as they have done with Joe Willock.
But, in the short-term, he could help to add dynamism and competitiveness to their midfield.
When Gallagher was with Charlton Athletic in 2019 he was described as ‘unreal’ by then Addicks boss Lee Bowyer (TalkSPORT).
And then Gallagher proved he had Premier League quality last season when he impressed in West Bromwich Albion’s side, despite their relegation.
