Newcastle United have now made Conor Gallagher their top target for the final stages of the summer transfer window after accepting that their chances of signing James Maddison are slim, according to a report from The Sun.

The Magpies will surely be one of the busiest sides ahead of the deadline. Eddie Howe is yet to add any attacking players to his ranks during this window.

They have recently made a big push to sign Maddison. Reports have claimed that they bid for the £60 million-rated Leicester City star.

However, it appears that they are ready to throw in the towel in their pursuit of Maddison. And they now have another name at the top of their wishlist.

According to The Sun, Newcastle are ready to prioritise a move for Gallagher. It is noted that he is rated at around £40 million. But Thomas Tuchel is reluctant to let him go, having labelled him ‘fantastic’.

Signing Gallagher would be a superb way for Newcastle to round off the window. He was arguably Crystal Palace’s best player while on loan at Selhurst Park last year.

His energy and work-rate would quickly make him a fan favourite on Tyneside. And he backs that up with moments of sheer quality.

He will have reservations about remaining at Chelsea. It is hard to see him starting regularly at Stamford Bridge over the next couple of years.

So he will surely be tempted by the prospect of moving to Newcastle if they make a move.

The Magpies are moving in the right direction after a few years of battling near the bottom of the table. Gallagher may find it difficult to turn down becoming a part of the progress.
