Report: Newcastle have made 'big pitch' to try and get 'sensational' player to SJP, but he's still turned them down
According to Get French Football News (GFFN), Georginio Wijnaldum has just turned down a return to Newcastle United.
The Dutchman, a Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool during his time at Anfield, has been heavily linked with a return to England.
His time at Paris Saint-Germain since he joined them last summer hasn’t quite been as good as he would’ve hoped. He is yet to play 1000 minutes of football in Ligue 1, which has given rise to rumours that he wants to come back to the Premier League.
Newcastle United, a club he knows very well, have been linked with a move for him, as have Arsenal, who are in desperate need of a new midfielder themselves. Sadly for both clubs, it doesn’t look like it will happen this month.
Wijnaldum turns down a return to Newcastle United
According to GFFN, Wijnaldum hasn’t even thought of leaving PSG this month. The French league leaders are reportedly open to letting him leave, but he isn’t entertaining that option just yet.
The report claims that both Arsenal and Newcastle enquired about the possibility of signing Wijnaldum this month.
The Magpies even reportedly tabled a ‘big pitch’ to convince the Dutchman to return to St James’ Park, a place where he spent a year between 2015 and 2016 before switching the famous black and white for the red of Liverpool.
However, Wijnaldum has rejected that offer and he is set to stay in Paris barring a very late change of heart.
Newcastle are absolutely right to try and re-sign Wijnaldum this month but it’s just a shame that he has turned it down.
The Dutchman has a ton of experience under his belt, knows the Premier League really well and would add something that Newcastle are really missing – regular goals from midfield.
Wijnaldum, labelled as ‘sensational‘ by Jurgen Klopp, would’ve been a brilliant signing for the Magpies, but Eddie Howe and co should move on to their other targets now.
There are just six days left in the transfer window and if Newcastle don’t use it right, they could end up going down.
