Newcastle United have reportedly made an approach for coveted Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.
According to French publication L’Equipe, the Magpies have joined the hunt for the Lille dynamo, who has been making headlines regularly in the lead up to and during the transfer window.
The 20-year-old’s stock is high at the moment having been in very impressive form, with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur having all been linked.
L’Equipe say that Spurs and also Wolverhampton Wanderers have made offers for Soumare, but also in the running, somewhat surprisingly, are Newcastle.
Lille are open to selling for around €50 million/£43 million (Buzzsport), but Soumare is thought to be keen to stay put until the end of the season.
TBR’s view- Soumare would be a huge Newcastle statement
It is very surprising to see Newcastle reportedly in the mix for Soumare given the interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
A move to St. James’ Park would surely be unlikely, but Soumare pitching up would be one of the club’s most exciting signings in many years.
Newcastle have some decent options in the engine room, but no real midfield general capable of driving the team forwards.
Put simply, Soumare would be a major show of ambition by Newcastle.
