Report: Newcastle have held discussions over buying 'fantastic' 26-year-old but know he has other offers

Newcastle have held talks to buy Matt Targett from Aston Villa but are not the only club in the race for the defender.

The 26-year-old has been on loan at St James’ Park since the January transfer window, helping to tighten up Eddie Howe’s defence.

The Chronicle report that discussions have been held with the defender but he has other interest from clubs closer to his base in the south-west of England.

Eddie Howe called Targett ‘fantastic‘ when he signed him on loan and the arrangement has worked out ideally for all concerned.

Newcastle have held talks to buy Targett

The report reads: “Fans will be keen to see how things work in the recruitment stakes with chief scout Steve Nickson finalising his shortlist for Howe ahead of the opening of the window on June 10.

The club have been in discussions with Matt Targett about making his loan deal a permanent one but know that there are teams closer to his home in the South West that are also keen.

Targett is set to quit Aston Villa as he does not feel he has a future under Steven Gerrard. Gerrard told him to fight for his place after signing Lucas Digne last January but at 26, Targett felt he was entitled to pursue regular first-team action.

Howe will have to make a decision at left-back having handed Paul Dummett a one year deal to be part of the squad next term while Jamal Lewis is also still very much on the books. The Toon head coach has three or four players listed in every position this summer and will look to make improvements right across the board.

Leeds were linked with Targett last month but their Premier League status hangs in the balance going into the final weekend of the season.

Newcastle would seemingly have a head start to get Targett, but the possibility remains that they want another left-back they would consider to be of a higher calibre.

The report says that Newcastle are prepared to be patient to get the targets they want over the summer, with Howe wanting improvement in all areas of the pitch.
