Newcastle United have reportedly been looking at Rochdale starlet Luke Matheson long before his performance against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

The youngster, who is still just 16 years of age, caught the eye in the competition by scoring Rochdale’s equaliser at Old Trafford that forced a penalty shootout – which the Red Devils won.

Apparently the defender has been tracked by Newcastle for over a year according to The Chronicle, after making his first-team debut aged just 15 in the Checkatrade Trophy last season.

The day after his cup outing against the 20-time champions of England, Matheson headed back to school for a psychology exam.

It was a great moment for Matheson at Old Trafford, and the youngster will no doubt be on cloud nine.

Newcastle may have to move fast if they want the talented teenager, who will have placed himself firmly in the shop window with his heroics.

Matheson looks set for a bright future and if he works hard, a Premier League move may not be out of the question.

Newcastle arguably need an option for the future at right-back and lively Matheson could be a gem.
