Report: Newcastle eyeing another Barcelona star

Spanish newspaper Marca have claimed that Newcastle United are interested in signing 22-year-old Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena this summer, adding to the long list of Barcelona players linked with The Toon.

Newcastle’s prospective new owners could reportedly confirm their takeover this week, and such reports continue to see Newcastle linked with plenty of high-profile players. Alena is currently on loan at Real Betis.

The Toon have already been touted as a possible suitor for Philippe Coutinho (Mundo Deportivo), Arturo Vidal (Mundo Deportivo), Antoine Griezmann (Sport Mediaset) and Brazilian right-back Emerson (SPORT).

Now, Alena could be on his way to Newcastle. A ball-playing midfielder, Alena has broken into Barcelona’s senior side and has clocked up 39 outings for Barca and is a Spain Under-21 international. He has a contract at Barcelona until 2022.

TBR’s view – Alena would be a top addition, a Pochettino hint?

Mauricio Pochettino wanted Alena at Tottenham, as per Mundo Deportivo. Now linked with replacing Steve Bruce at Newcastle, interest in Alena surely suggests that Newcastle could be looking to tempt Pochettino into a move to Tyneside.

Signing players he wanted at Tottenham could certainly boost the club’s chances of attracting Pochettino, but it remains to be seen if Alena would want such a move.
