According to a report from Tutto Hellas Verona, Newcastle United are interested in signing Giovanni Simeone and Antonin Barak.

The Magpies, under Eddie Howe and their new owners, are expected to make a statement in January. Newcastle have been linked with a whole host of names already, but we can’t imagine seeing a superstar signing arrive in the winter window.

Howe’s priority now is to keep Newcastle in the Premier League. They are in a difficult position at the moment, but a few quality additions in the January transfer window could change their fortunes.

If the report is to be believed, the Toon are keeping a close eye on Simeone and Barak, who have been impressive for Hellas Verona this term.

Newcastle United are interested in Simeone and Barak

Newcastle need reinforcements all across the pitch. The midfield and defence is the priority, but a little help in attack wouldn’t be too bad an idea either, especially as Howe’s philosophy will likely be the opposite of Steve Bruce’s.

Simeone has scored nine goals and has provided three assists in 11 Serie A games, while Barak, a 6ft 3in tall attacking midfielder, has directly contributed to six goals.

Both players are really interesting options for the Magpies. The Argentinian, son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, has football in his blood, and his performances this season have been ‘really impressive,’ as claimed by Hellas Verona boss Igor Tudor.

Barak, on the other hand, is hugely versatile. He has mostly played as an attacking midfielder but has been deployed by Tudor as a centre-forward as well. He also played as a defensive midfielder for the Czech Republic a few months ago, which makes him a very decent option for any club.

TBR View:

Simeone and Barak are very good players who are entering the prime years of their careers. They are definitely two players clubs should be looking at in January, but Newcastle may be better off focusing their attention elsewhere.

The Magpies need players who will come in and hit the ground running in January. They need people who will have an immediate impact to help them get out of the hole they are currently in, which makes Simeone and Barak very risky options as they’ve never played in the Premier League before.

Howe and co should consider players who know the English game well and can deliver without taking a lot of time to settle. That will help the Toon stay up in the Premier League, which will then give them a chance to revisit their interest in Simeone and Barak in the summer.
