Report: Newcastle eye 22-year-old Arsenal starlet
Newcastle United are monitoring Matteo Guendouzi as they consider a summer move for the Arsenal starlet, according to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato.
Guendouzi looks set to leave the Emirates permanently at the end of the season. As reported by Football London, Marseille will trigger the £9.5 million option to keep him should they avoid relegation from Ligue 1.
They are currently third in the table, taking 22 points from their opening 12 games in the top flight.
So a move to State Velodrome looks to be on the cards. But perhaps his time as a permanent Marseille signing will only be brief.
That is because Foot Mercato are reporting that Newcastle want the 22-year-old. It is claimed that they are eyeing a move for next summer.
The report does note that Guendouzi is happy with Jorge Sampaoli’s men and not thinking about leaving. But perhaps Newcastle may look to test their resolve.
Guendouzi would be exciting signing for Newcastle after mixed Arsenal spell
Guendouzi has proved that he has the talent to shine at the highest level. He has already made well over 170 appearances during his club career.
His temperament appears to be the key reason behind Mikel Arteta’s decision to let him go. He has not played for the Gunners since losing his cool in the defeat to Brighton in 2020.
But he has done well with Marseille. And he would surely love the chance to prove a point to Arsenal by shining with a Premier League rival.
He is a player who has previously been lauded by Unai Emery. The Spaniard – who, of course, was linked with Newcastle this week – admitted that his progress shortly after his move to the Emirates had been a ‘very big surprise’.
It would certainly be a statement if Newcastle could bring him back to England in the future.
