Report: Newcastle ‘exploring’ January return for left-footer

The Shields Gazette have claimed that Newcastle United are ‘exploring’ a January return for left-back Jetro Willems after the Dutch star finally recovered from a long-term knee issue that he suffered while on loan with the Toon.

Willems, 26, joined Newcastle on loan in the summer of 2019 and immediately impressed – striking up an excellent partnership with Allan Saint-Maximin on the left flank. He played 20 times for the Toon, having a hand in five goals.

However, the former PSV Eindhoven ace suffered a long-term knee injury against Chelsea in January and his loan was cut short. Only now, has he returned to training – but with parent club Eintracht Frankfurt, where his contract expires in the summer.

Now, the latest report claims Newcastle are considering a move to sign him in January – and provide Jamal Lewis with competition at left-back. The Chronicle have previously claimed he has remained close with Saint-Maximin.

TBR’s view – Would be a top signing, but does he start?

Lewis has been in excellent form this season, since joining the club from Norwich City. But cover, and competition, is certainly needed at left-back – with Paul Dummett struggling with both form and injury.

Even if he does not start for Newcastle, he would be a really strong signing for Steve Bruce’s side – and given his relationship with the players and fans, surely the Netherlands ace would be a no-brainer.
