Newcastle United have managed to pull themselves clear of the Premier League bottom three in recent weeks.

As things stand, the Magpies are 14th in the table and three points clear of the relegation zone.

Newcastle are likely to spend big in the transfer window if they survive in the top flight.

A proven goalscorer could be on the cards for the Magpies next term.

One player apparently on Newcastle’s radar has been in superb form in Serie A this term.

And he could potentially cost the Magpies as little as £21million.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle made contact with Giovanni Simeone in January.

The son of Atletico Madrid manager, Diego, has had an impressive season so far in 2021-22.

Simeone has netted 15 goals in 24 appearances in Serie A for Hellas Verona, on loan from Cagliari.

The 26-year-old scored all four goals in his side’s 4-1 victory over Napoli in October.

A week later, Simeone scored a brace in a 2-1 victory against Juventus just a week later.

His form in front of goal has seen Verona climb to ninth, just four points outside the European places.

Verona have the option to buy Simeone at the end of his loan spell this season.

However, Tuttomercatoweb speculates that they could cash in after buying him, with a £21million fee mentioned.

Newcastle could potentially be up against Atletico Madrid for Simeone’s services.

“I really like him”

In 2018, then Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane spoke highly of the striker.

“Giovanni has been very good,” Tribal Football quoted him as saying.

“I’m happy for him and also for Juve, I thank him also for the bianconeri, I really like him as a footballer.”

Zidane approval aside, Simeone has shown he’s got what it takes at the highest level.

And with Newcastle able to offer him a lucrative contract, he could well be tempted by a move to St James’ Park.
