Lancs Live has claimed that Preston North End and Wigan Athletic are both interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Dan Barlaser this summer, but The Toon could offer Barlaser a new deal.
The 22-year-old midfielder has starred on loan at League One side Accrington Stanley this season, clocking up 45 appearances in all competitions. He has even scored three goals, including one in the FA Cup against Colchester.
Barlaser has a contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2020, and is somewhat way down the pecking order behind the likes of Sean Longstaff, Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Ki Sung-yueng.
But, Rafa Benitez may look to keep him, with Shelvey, Hayden and Longstaff all being linked with moves. Indeed, the report claims Newcastle may look to offer the former Turkey Under-17 international a new contract.
Both Preston and Wigan are keen to sign Barlaser permanently, with the Championship being the next logical step. But he could sign a Newcastle contract, and then go on loan to either of the interested parties.
Barlaser is now 22 and he is not getting any younger. A new contract should only be offered to Barlaser if he can shine in the Championship, on loan at either Wigan or Preston.
Last season will have given Newcastle plenty of hope surrounding the youngster, who has been a regular member of the club’s reserve side for years. Indeed, he has 88 career appearances for the second string.
Sending him on loan to either Preston or Wigan will give him experience and Newcastle an indicator to see if he can impress at that level. If he does, a new deal should be forthcoming.
