Newcastle United are on the lookout for new additions in January and according to the Daily Mail, could challenge Tottenham for the signing of Juventus star, Weston McKennie.

The Mail reports that Eddie Howe is keen to bring in Harry Winks from Tottenham if he can. However, it’s also stated that McKennie could be another on the radar of Howe and Newcastle.

The Toon’s interest comes on the same weekend that reports suggested that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici had agreed that McKennie was the ideal signing for Spurs in January.

McKennie, 23, has appeared 10 times for Juve in Serie A this season. Predominantly a holding midfielder, the USA international has scored twice this season in Turin.

Juventus signed McKennie in the summer after he impressed enough during a loan spell. The Turin giants paid around £18.5m for the midfielder.

It’s claimed by Calciomercato that Juve will be looking for around £29m if they are to agree to sell McKennie now. With PIF’s riches and Newcastle desperate for players, that sort of fee might well be within reach.

TBR’s View: Weston McKennie to Newcastle is smart business but tricky to do

McKennie falls into the category of quality player but maybe not quite the marquee level PIF will be craving in January. Of course, Newcastle need steady players as well. But there will also be an ask at board level for some big names.

The problem is that Tottenham now have Antonio Conte in charge and the pull of the Italian will likely intrigue McKennie, should Juve agree to sell.

McKennie is a top midfielder and at 23, has plenty of time to improve further and become a force in Europe. The project at Newcastle might interest him. However, Tottenham are also a big club and could also convince him to leave Italy.
