According to a report from The Chronicle, Newcastle could be handed an opportunity to sign Manchester City defender John Stones on loan in the January transfer window.

The Magpies’ takeover has brought in links to about 50 players already. From Mbappe and Haaland to even Messi and Ronaldo, we’ve seen everything on social media, but a player like Stones is, in a way, a realistic option.

The Englishman revived his Manchester City career last season and became one of the best defenders in the country. He was absolutely phenomenal and played a massive part in helping Pep Guardiola’s side win the Premier League.

Stones’ luck hasn’t quite been the same this term. The Englishman is yet to feature for Manchester City, and that could potentially play into Newcastle and other interested clubs’ hands.

Can Newcastle United sign John Stones?

The report does not outright say that the Magpies and their new owners are interested in Stones, but if he’s available, why wouldn’t they be?

The Englishman, after a couple of underwhelming seasons, proved what he’s capable of last term. Many felt he was guaranteed to retain his starting spot this campaign, but Guardiola has preferred Aymeric Laporte instead.

Stones, labelled as ‘outstanding‘ by Guardiola, will at some point want to become a regular starter again, but that’s looking unlikely at the moment. That could complicate things for the former Everton defender, who can’t afford to sit on the sidelines for too long.

The report claims that if things don’t change soon, Stones could well be available on loan in January. That deal could reportedly be pushed towards Newcastle, which would be brilliant for the Magpies, who need a quality defender.

It will be interesting to see if Stones would entertain a move to Tyneside if things don’t change for him at the Etihad. It really is an exciting time to be a Newcastle player, but if the Englishman becomes available, plenty of other clubs will be keen to sign him as well.
