Rony Lopes may have only joined Sevilla in the summer, but a report from the Chronicle has suggested that he is one player who is on Steve Bruce’s radar as Newcastle United look to add more quality to their attacking ranks.
The Magpies have endured a tough start to the campaign, with one win coming in their opening six games. They have had some tough fixtures, and deserve credit for the win over Tottenham. But they have suffered three defeats.
The Chronicle reports that Bruce has instructed his scouts to look at wide options ahead of the January transfer window, with Newcastle already having to deal with a number of injuries in those areas of the pitch.
And the Chronicle suggests that one player that the Magpies have their eye on is Lopes. The 23-year-old has reportedly been continually scouted by the Premier League side.
Lopes – who began his professional career at Manchester City – only joined Sevilla in the summer after four years with Monaco, with Get French Football News reporting that the deal cost around £22.3 million. The Portuguese has made one substitute appearance in the league for the La Liga side.
The Chronicle does suggest that Newcastle plan to back Bruce in the market. But it is interesting that they are continuing to track a player who signed a five-year deal just last month (via Mundo Deportivo).
But based on some of the form that Lopes showed during his time in the Principality, it would appear that he could be a fantastic addition on Tyneside if Bruce can get him in a future window.
He scored 15 league goals during the 2017/18 season as they finished second in Ligue 1. He got nowhere near that tally last term, and Sevilla would surely be even more reluctant to sell if he did this year.
But given his ability to play anywhere in attacking midfield, there is no question that he could be another signing who excites the Toon Army if there is a chance of a deal being done.
