Newcastle United are reportedly trying to offload striker Yoshinori Muto.

The Japan international has been with the club two years after joining for a reported £9.5 million from Bundesliga outfit Mainz (Chronicle Live).

There were strong expectations for the ace after he had caught the eye at the 2018 World Cup, but things haven’t really worked out for the 28-year-old.

Muto has made just 28 appearances for the club in all competitions, including just 10 in 2019/20, most of which have been as a substitute.

For one reason or another, Muto just hasn’t been able to convince Rafa Benitez or Steve Bruce of his quality, and now The Daily Mail claim sources close to the player have said the club are trying to sell him.

TBR’s View – Muto can count himself unlucky

Not too many Newcastle fans would complain if Muto was offloaded, but one does wonder if he has actually had a fair crack at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle have found the scoring of goals particularly difficult since their return to the Premier League in 2017, with the Magpies’ four strikers contributing just six league strikes between them last term.

Joelinton had ample opportunities last term, and Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll both had their injury problems.

Maybe his level in training wasn’t enough to convince Bruce to trust him, but he probably feel somewhat hard done by if Newcastle do sell him on.
