Report: Newcastle and West Ham keeping tabs on wonderkid Erkan Eyibil

Turkish Football have claimed that both Newcastle United and West Ham United are both interested in signing Mainz 05 youngster Erkan Eyibil in the summer.

The 17-year-old is the shining light in Mainz’s youth sides. He scored 27 goals and created the same amount of assists in just 47 matches for the Bundesliga club’s Under-17 side.

He was promoted to the club’s Under-19 side this season and has continued his marvellous for. Indeed, Eyibil has scored 12 goals in 18 games – including a hat-trick in his last appearance during a 6-1 win over Frankfurt.

Despite all of this, Eyibil only has a contract at Mainz until the summer of 2020. It has seen plenty of clubs become interested as per the report – including Newcastle and West Ham.

Turkish media have labelled Eyibil as the new Mesut Ozil, as he plays in attacking midfield and produces excellent vision and goalscoring qualities week in, week out.

TBR’s view

His stats say everything. Wonderkid is a strong description of the teenager, who shows the kind of creativity you would expect of a player that has played at the top level for years.

He has seven caps for Germany’s Under-17 side and has already been called up to the Under-18 side. It remains to be seen how much any interested parties would have to spend to sign Eyibil.

But the fact he is in his final 18 months at Mainz means he could be allowed to leave on the cheap side. A must-buy for any Premier League clubs, not least West Ham and Newcastle.
