Report: Newcastle and West Ham contact club over 24-year-old, Alan Shearer called him a 'threat'
According to The Athletic, West Ham have now made contact with Liverpool regarding a deal for Nat Phillips.
What’s the story?
Well, The Athletic believe West Ham have made their interest known in recent days, joining Newcastle in making their intentions clear.
Burnley, Brighton and Bayer Leverkusen have also expressed a desire to sign the 24-year-old, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2020/21.
Following injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Jürgen Klopp had no choice but to put his faith in Phillips.
The Bolton-born colossus didn’t let anyone down, making 20 heroic appearances as Liverpool finished third in the Premier League.
Despite that, his future at Anfield is far from certain, following the arrival of Ibrahima Konate in a deal worth £36m.
The Athletic believe Liverpool want £15m for Phillips.
Should Newcastle or West Ham pay £15m?
In our view, we don’t think Phillips is worth £15m.
Last season was the centre-back’s first proper campaign of regular football in England.
Admittedly, he did very well.
However, the life of a centre-back at Liverpool is vastly different to what will be expected of a Newcastle or West Ham centre-back.
The Reds enjoy more possession, and due to their dominance, they don’t have to defend as much as a conservative side like Newcastle do.
In that respect, we don’t believe Phillips – who Alan Shearer once called a huge threat in the air – is worth paying £15m for, not until we see how he copes in a side below Liverpool’s level.
