Report: Newcastle and Steve Bruce want Celtic striker more than Rangers star

The Daily Star have claimed that Newcastle United and Steve Bruce are interested in signing Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard and Rangers hothead Alfredo Morelos this summer – but prefers Edouard to Morelos.

Newcastle are expected to be in the transfer window for a new striker after £40million club-record signing Joelinton has flopped since his move from Hoffenheim. The Brazilian has netted just once in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Andy Carroll is in the final few months of his second Toon stay, while Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto have been repeatedly linked with an exit. Bruce wants to sign a striker – and is keen on Celtic’s Edouard.

It comes as little surprise. The Frenchman has netted 27 goals in 42 games this season, but has also created 19 assists – and has attracted interest from Arsenal, Leicester and Everton, as per The Mirror. It is believed he is rated at around £30million.

The report also claims Newcastle are keeping tabs on Colombia international Morelos, but Bruce prefers Edouard.

TBR’s view – Edouard a bargain at just £30m

But can Newcastle fight off their competitors to nab Edouard? A move to a club as big as Arsenal will prove tantalising, and it certainly convinced Kieran Tierney last summer. Such a move could depend on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future, though.

Leicester will also tempt Edouard. Potential Champions League football, plus a reunion with the man that brought him to Celtic – Brendan Rodgers. Everton and Carlo Ancelotti will also prove tempting.

Newcastle’s only saving grace will be that they can guarantee Edouard he will be first choice. Arsenal have Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and more, Leicester have Jamie Vardy and Everton have Dom Calvert-Lewin.

But at Newcastle, Edouard outweighs the competition.
