Report: Newcastle and Leeds join chase for English ace, but Gerrard is set to win

TeamTalk claim Leeds and Newcastle have joined the race for Blackburn midfielder Joe Rothwell – but that Rangers are set to win his signature.

Rothwell, 26, has been a regular for Blackburn since joining the club from Oxford United. In three years, he has played 132 times in all competitions.

An England Under-20 international, the ex-Manchester United trainee had played 86 times at Oxford – and is now an established Championship star.

Indeed, he is one of the second-tier’s best performing midfielders this season – having a hand in five goals during 13 Championship games so far.

The report claims that Leeds and Newcastle are two of a handful of clubs to join the race for Rothwell, who is set to see his contract expire in June 2022.

Burnley, Southampton, Brighton and Palace are also keen – but it seems he has made up his mind. A move to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, is his choice.

Leeds and Newcastle miss out as Rangers close in on Rothwell

Rangers do have options in the middle of the park – but new signing Leandro Bacuna is struggling. John Lundstram is improving his form.

Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo are also options. But Davis could retire next summer, and Kamara could leave.

A new midfielder might be needed at Ibrox, with Jack somewhat injury prone. Rothwell would be a brilliant addition, especially on a free.

For Rothwell, a move to a Premier League club or the chance to play in Europe with Rangers – surely the latter is more tempting.
