Report: Newcastle add Premier League winner to DoF shortlist, currently at Champions League club
Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claim Newcastle have added Marc Overmars to their sporting director shortlist – as he continues to impress at Ajax.
Overmars, 48, has overseen the rise of Ajax since rejoining the club in the summer of 2012. He has a contract at Ajax until June 2024.
The 97-98 Premier League winner is renowned as one of the best in his roles in European football – up there with Luis Campos and Fabio Paratici.
Newcastle are keen to bring him to the club, as they look for a man capable of spending their enormous wealth wisely. He has done so at Ajax, superbly.
Most recently, Overmars has spent Ajax’s limited funds on the likes of Sebastian Haller from West Ham – buying the striker for around £20million.
Struggling at West Ham, Haller is sparkling at Ajax – scoring 25 goals in 36 games, laying on 11 assists. Overmars pinpointed the Frenchman.
Overmars to Newcastle: Could Toon convince Arsenal legend?
The issue for Newcastle is that Overmars is an Ajax legend. He clocked up 189 appearances for the club in a five-year stint, before joining Arsenal.
He is shining in his role at Ajax, firmly established among the board. Would he be willing to give that up to join the Newcastle project, ahead of January?
Clearly, the Newcastle project is exciting and he would have much more money to spend. He would also be working in the best league in the world.
But can he put his loyalty to Ajax aside to try something new, something exciting with Newcastle? That is the stumbling block for the Toon.
