Report: Newcastle add 24-year-old to January list, branded 'brilliant' by Klopp

The Mail claim Newcastle have added Bournemouth striker Dom Solanke to their January shortlist. The injury suffered by Callum Wilson is likely to see Eddie Howe’s side look to bring in a replacement for their no.9.

Solanke, 24, has endured a tricky spell at Bournemouth since Howe brought the one-time England international to the Vitality Stadium. But since relegation to the Championship, Solanke has come alive.

Last season, Solanke scored 15 goals and laid on 11 assists in 40 Championship games. But this season, his form has reached new heights – netting 18 goals in 25 league games. Scott Parker is getting the best out of Solanke.

Given Newcastle need a striker, and Howe having previously signed Solanke, there is clearly scope for a reunion on Tyneside. Especially, given Solanke’s incredible form this season. He has a contract at Bournemouth until 2024.

The Rise & Fall of José Mourinho

While still at Liverpool, Solanke scored four goals in two games for England’s Under-21 side in 2018 – against Italy and Denmark. It prompted Jurgen Klopp to label his striker “brilliant” on the club’s website.

Newcastle eye Solanke: Bournemouth star is perfect for Newcastle

There is no point Newcastle spending big on a big-name striker, that will just see Wilson benched and then want to leave. The Toon no.9 is one of the club’s most-important players.

So, Newcastle need a striker good enough to provide competition to Wilson when he is fit. But also one that is happy to act as cover and come off the bench, but also play up top with Wilson. Solanke might just be ideal.
