Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has accepted defeat in his quest to sign Odsonne Edouard from Celtic this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
The Magpies certainly appear to need to bolster their attacking ranks during this window. Jonjo Shelvey ended last season as the club’s top goalscorer in the Premier League with just six strikes to his name.
And it appears that Edouard was Bruce’s key target. The Mail reports that the Newcastle boss wanted to spend big on the Frenchman.
However, the Daily Mail has suggested that Celtic have made it clear that they are not interested in letting Edouard leave. And Newcastle have reportedly accepted that they need to look elsewhere.
TBR View: Edouard would have been an inspired signing for Newcastle
It is no surprise to see Newcastle reportedly target Edouard. In truth, it is difficult to imagine that there is any side in the Premier League not interested in the 22-year-old.
He has been outstanding for the Bhoys. And given his age, he should only get better in the coming years.
He would have been a fantastic signing for Bruce’s side. It would have been a huge statement of intent during Bruce’s first full summer at St James’ Park.
Unfortunately, Newcastle fans will probably not be surprised to hear that a move for Edouard is off the cards. And there will plenty of apprehension surrounding who the Magpies may get instead.
