Report: New Tottenham signing shouted at by Harry Winks during Thursday loss
Football London reporter Alasdair Gold has explained how Harry Winks lambasted new signing Bryan Gil on Thursday night. Tottenham suffered an abysmal defeat to Portuguese minnows Pacos de Ferreira, losing 1-0. During the match, Gold explains why Winks shouted at new Tottenham signing Gil.
Gil, 20, was one of 11 changes made by Nuno Espirito Santo. The Spanish wonderkid was one of three new signings included in the line-up – along with Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero. But Spurs really struggled, as Dane Scarlett and Nile John were also handed starts.
The report from Gold states that Winks ‘yelled’ at Gil – who joined Tottenham for Erik Lamela and a fee of £21.6million from Sevilla. The wonderkid was caught wandering out of position from the wing, which was not to the liking of Winks. The 25-year-old England star shouted at him.
“Roaming all across the pitch despite starting on the left of a three with John and Scarlett, Gil’s movement did leave Spurs open at times. It caused issues for those trying to cover him,” Gold says. “Winks did make it clear at one point to get into position as Spurs’ shape was all over the place.”
Gil has plenty to learn at Tottenham; Winks leadership?
At 20, Gil is still to learn about the defenseive sturdiness of English football. Nuno wants his side to play on the counter at times, as they did against Manchester City. That means Tottenham attackers need to be defensively solid – but then when attacking, are allowed to be free and flowing.
But it seems Gil got mixed up, roaming from his position. While it is just a sign that youngster Gil still has plenty to learn, something you would expect from someone so young – it says a lot about Winks, too. The England star looks set to remain and his leadership will only impress Nuno.
