Fabio Paratici was left crushed by Tottenham Hotspur missing out on signing Luis Diaz with the forward joining Liverpool instead during the January transfer window, according to a report from The Athletic.
Diaz moving to Anfield was arguably the most exciting deal of the month. Unfortunately for Tottenham, it was a transfer that they believed that they were going to pull off.

The Athletic reports that Tottenham made a £37.6 million bid for Diaz. And the move was well on its way to being completed. The forward himself agreed to the deal in principle.
However, Liverpool then acted, according to The Athletic. And, agonisingly for Spurs, the Reds were delighted to see Tottenham agree terms for less than £40 million. Porto had demanded €80 million previously.

Obviously, Diaz would ultimately end up moving to Merseyside. And The Athletic reports that Paratici was left crushed by Tottenham not signing the forward.
Tottenham could have done little more in bid to sign Luis Diaz
Paratici’s disappointment over Diaz is understandable. And the forward joining another Premier League club will likely only exacerbate that anguish.
But Tottenham could have hardly done more. They agreed a fee with Porto. And Diaz was keen on the move. So had Liverpool not entered the fray, it is likely Diaz would be a Spurs player right now.
Paratici did respond. Tottenham made two signings before the deadline passed. Both Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur arrived from Juventus.
Bentancur has already provided a glimpse of what Tottenham fans can look forward to. He scored for Uruguay on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Kulusevski looks an extremely exciting talent.
Diaz – once labelled ‘sensational‘ by Tim Vickery – will be under a little pressure at Liverpool. He should be at the peak of his powers. And he arrives having scored 16 goals already this season. Fabrizio Romano has suggested that he could be the long-term replacement for Sadio Mane.
Tottenham hoped Diaz could be their game-changing signing last month. They will now hope that they actually had a lucky escape.
