A report from the Daily Mail has suggested that Jose Mourinho has so far held regular one-to-one talks with Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Winks and Dele Alli since coming in as Tottenham Hotspur head coach.
Mourinho has got off to a good start since replacing Mauricio Pochettino. Spurs have won both of his opening games in charge. His side came from behind to beat Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday.
And it is suggested by the Daily Mail that Mourinho’s methods on the training ground are, so far, proving popular following the end of Pochettino’s tenure.
The Mail reports that he has held regular one-to-one talks with the Tottenham quintet. It is reported that he has spoken to Kane on several occasions since coming in.
TBR View – A possible hint about Mourinho’s plans? And maybe Alderweireld’s future?
It must be noted that there is nothing in the Mail’s report suggesting that Mourinho is not speaking to the other players in a similar environment, or that he has no plans to.
But it is perhaps interesting that these five players have been mentioned. It certainly suggests that they could be central to Mourinho’s plans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
There could be a debate about the most intriguing name on the list. But given his contract situation, it would be difficult to argue with those who deem Alderweireld’s presence to be significant.
As reported by The Telegraph recently, the Belgian’s contract expires this summer. And Spurs fans would have been forgiven for thinking that his exit was inevitable.
However, that report noted that the defender could now decide to stay following Mourinho’s arrival. And the suggestion that he is one of the players that the Spurs boss is speaking to regularly certainly drops a further hint that a u-turn could be possible.
Perhaps Mourinho has pinpointed the core he wants to build his team around. And it appears that Alderweireld is one of those set for prominent role.
