Frank Lampard was keen to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal during the previous January transfer window, according to a report from The Athletic.
The big news, of course, concerns Lampard following his departure from Chelsea on Monday. He leaves after around 18 months at the helm at Stamford Bridge.

The Athletic has detailed some of the problems that cropped up during Lampard’s tenure. And the report has claimed that Aubameyang was one player that the Englishman wanted a year ago.
At the time, Aubameyang’s future at the Emirates looked uncertain. He was set to be out of contract at the end of this season. So had he not signed fresh terms, it seems likely that Arsenal would have sold him last summer.

As noted by BBC Sport, the captain decided to sign a new three-year deal with the Gunners in September.
Of course, missing out on the Gabon international would come back to haunt Lampard. It was Aubameyang who scored both Arsenal’s goals against Chelsea in the FA Cup final back in August.
It is difficult to say what could have happened had Chelsea signed Aubameyang last January.
But an FA Cup final contested between the same two teams may have ended differently had Aubameyang been playing for the other side – such was his influence on Arsenal at the time.
And had Lampard overseen victory at Wembley, he would arguably have more credit in the bank.
