Report names 3 players Fonseca could target for Spurs including 'phenomenal' midfielder
Spurs finally look to be closing in on a new manager in Paulo Fonseca.
Spurs have apparently held talks with Fonseca over a three-year contract to become Jose Mourinho’s successor.
Fabio Paratici, reportedly set to join Tottenham from Juventus, recommended the 48-year-old, added the report.
Italian outlet La Repubblica has now claimed that the former Roma boss could look to raid his old club.
They say it’s “inevitable” that Fonseca could turn his attention to Serie A, in particular the Giallorossi.
He apparently developed a “real passion” for working with three Roma players in particular.
The trio named are midfielder Gonzalo Villar, defender Gianluca Mancini, and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini.
That said, La Repubblica claimed that all three are “unattainable”, but then added “almost”.
Villar, Mancini and Pellegrini – who are they?
Villar is a 23-year-old central midfielder who joined Roma from Elche in January 2020.
He cost Roma around £3.4m, plus around £850,000 in bonuses, and has made 58 appearances for his club.
Villar won his maiden Spain cap this month but isn’t in the Euro 2020 squad.
Mancini is a 25-year-old centre-back who joined Roma for a reported £17.1m last summer.
The former Atalanta man has made 82 appearances for Roma and has won six Italy caps.
However, like Villar, he didn’t make the cut for his nation’s Euro 2020 squad.
Meanwhile, Pellegrini made it into the squad, but he’s sadly picked up an injury.
The 24-year-old is a versatile midfielder who can also play in a holding role and in attacking midfield.
Pellegrini came through the ranks at Roma and spent two years on Sassuolo’s books before being bought again by his boyhood club.
He has won 17 caps for the Azzurri, and Roma legend Francesco Totti has branded him “phenomenal”.
Spurs look to be on the right path – TBR View
Fonseca is a talented manager with a good track record and a decent silverware haul.
He also has a good football philosophy and will aim to bring exciting attacking football to Tottenham.
It’s good to hear he’s reportedly looking at potential Spurs targets already.
Even though Tottenham are unlikely to land all three, Pellegrini’s contract expires next year, so he might not be unrealistic.
