Report: Moyes is reluctant to use 'unbelievable' player at CB for West Ham despite Diop's injury

David Moyes is facing up to a central defensive injury crisis ahead of West Ham United’s Europa League semi-final.

Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna were already out injured before Issa Diop picked up an ankle ligament injury which could keep him out for the season.

And the Guardian are reporting that David Moyes is reluctant to use Declan Rice there, because he is so influential in midfield.

In February, Rice admitted that Moyes had considered using him at the back before a game where it looked like Craig Dawson – who is West Ham’s only fit centre half right now – would miss out.

“I’ve always known I’ve had this ability, but it’s about having the confidence and putting it into place. At the moment I’m happy in midfield, but I will never complain if I have to go back to centre-back,” he said.

“The manager pulled me the other day, Dawson might not have made the game, so I was going to play centre half.

“He made the game no problem at all. It’s a different game to midfield, but maybe one day when I’m older and my legs have gone I might go back to centre-half, but I’m loving this midfield role at the minute.”

We are running out of superlatives for Rice, really. Many England players suffered a hangover from Euro 2020 but Rice has gone to a new level.

Kolo Toure recently called him ‘unbelievable‘ and West Ham would lose a lot out of midfield if he moved back into defence.

Moyes might have to do it, because the alternatives are Jamal Baptiste, 18, and Aji Alese, 21, who started December’s Europa League loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

It is a big call and West Ham are seemingly paying the price for their lack of January recruitment right now, ahead of a huge game in Europe ahead.
