Report: Mourinho has just made approach for 'amazing' Tottenham player he trusted at N17

Tottenham Hotspur have seemingly been trying to find a transfer solution for Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga.

Over the past few weeks, Tottenham have reportedly been in talks over AC Milan over the 23-year-old.

However, Spurs have so far failed to strike a deal with the Italian champions.

Now, it looks as though Jose Mourinho could try to hijack Milan’s move for Tanganga.

A few days ago, Il Tempo (print edition, page 16, July 31, 2022) reported that Roma were eyeing the defender.

Now, Milan News has provided an update on the Giallorossi’s pursuit of Tanganga.

‘In the last few hours, Jose Mourinho’s Roma have put themselves forward,’ the Italian outlet has claimed today.

Milan and Tanganga: Why is the deal stalling?

As per TEAMtalk, AC Milan had reportedly agreed a deal ‘in principle’ for Tanganga.

However, the one factor apparently delaying the deal is Spurs’ demand for an obligatory transfer fee after the season-long loan.

Tottenham are believed to want Milan to pay £21m after the loan is completed, regardless of whether the loan move is successful.

This has delayed progress on the deal, seemingly allowing Roma into the race.

Tanganga to be reunited with former Tottenham boss?

Mourinho helped Tanganga launch his Tottenham career during the 2019-20 campaign.

The Spurs academy graduate made his first-team breakthrough that season, and looked like a potential future regular.

Tanganga made his debut in Tottenham’s League Cup defeat to Colchester in September 2019.

Then, he made his Premier League bow against Liverpool on 11 January, where he excelled against the Reds front line.

However, Tanganga is currently out of favour under Antonio Conte.

He made just 11 Premier League appearances for Spurs last season.

What Mourinho has previously said about Tanganga

After Tanganga’s Premier League debut against Liverpool, Mourinho told the Evening Standard: “The kid has reason to be very happy with his level, not with the result obviously, but with his first game in the Premier League.

“It couldn’t be a bigger one and he did it amazingly.

First on the right and then on the left, first [Sadio] Mane and then [Mohamed] Salah, and I think he was fantastic so I don’t want to take any credit for that.

“I worked with him only for a couple of months, I think academy, coaches who worked with him for so many years.

“I think it’s a good moment for him and I think it’s also a message for the kids in the academy that when the player is the right player with the right attitude and right qualities, the opportunity arises.”

And in April 2021, Mourinho was asked by about Tanganga’s increased game time at right-back.

“In spite of him being good in the air and he has a good positional education as a centre-back, I think probably his best position in the future is right-back,” he replied.

“As you know he is not a giant, he needs to improve, his crossing needs to improve, the timings to arrive in attacking positions.

“But he is comfortable with the ball, he doesn’t make many mistakes, he is solid, reads the game well and is a player we can trust.

“You can see his debut was against Liverpool and then the matches he played are normally matches of responsibility and quality of the opponent.

“He is a player we trust. He is developing quite well, good kid. Humble kid, so all good.”
