Report: Mourinho battling Tottenham to sign £18m Premier League player
Tottenham are reportedly looking to raid Southampton to sign colossal defender Jannik Vestergaard. But Tottenham could be about to receive competition from Jose Mourinho in the race to sign Vestergaard. Il Romanista suggest that the Danish Euro 2020 ace is on Mourinho’s radar.
Vestergaard, 28, is in the final year of his contract having joined Southampton in 2018 for £18million (ESPN). He has since played 79 times for the Saints – 32 of which came in 2020-21. The 29-time Denmark international scored three of his four Southampton goals last season, too.
It saw him start five of Denmark’s six games en route to the semis. Now, The Athletic claim Spurs want him as he proposes a cheaper option to the likes of Jules Kounde and Milan Skriniar – given his contract situation. But with Chelsea eyeing Gianluca Mancini, Mourinho is considering Vestergaard.
Which move is better for Vestergaard – Tottenham or Mourinho?
Realistically, at Roma he is not going to start – even if Mourinho chooses to play with a back three. However, if Chelsea do sign Mancini this summer, then Vestergaard has got to be tempted by Roma. Spurs will also be tempting, given the club are expected to shake up their options.
Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld could all be axed by Nuno Espirito Santo after poor 2020-21 campaigns. Alderweireld has asked to leave, while The Athletic say Sanchez is on the firing list. Spurs would save him having to change countries, but it may depend on their sales.
