Report: Mohammed bin Salman wants to sign Nabil Fekir for Newcastle

Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo has claimed that Newcastle United owner Mohammed bin Salman wants to sign Nabil Fekir from Real Betis.

The Magpies now have the ability to become a European powerhouse thanks to their new owners. PIF, who completed the takeover of Newcastle in October 2021, have a net worth of £320 billion, according to The Sun.

Transfer fees are no longer an issue for Newcastle, and Fekir is the man they reportedly want…again. However, the Frenchman doesn’t fancy a move.

Mohammed bin Salman wants to sign Nabil Fekir for Newcastle

Fekir, a World Cup winner with France, has long been linked with a move to Newcastle.

The report claims the Magpies’ new owners have wanted to sign him since 2020 – even before they completed the takeover. They wanted Fekir to be the face of the new project, but things just didn’t materialise.

Bin Salman, however, ‘hasn’t forgotten’ about Fekir, claims that report. He tried to sign him again in last summer’s transfer window, and it has been suggested that he’s the alternative to James Maddison in 2023.

However, even though the crowned prince of Saudi Arabia has personally been pushing to sign Fekir, the report claims that the Frenchman is not interested in the Magpies at all.

Fekir wants to stay at Betis, a club he has been at since joining them from Lyon in the summer of 2019. It has been claimed that he’s happy in the city of Seville and has no interest in a change now.

The 29-year-old signed a new contract in January this year and that does not run out until the end of the 2025/26 season.

He’s a bit like Lionel Messi

Fekir’s quality has never been questioned, he has always been a fantastic player.

The 29-year-old can score goals, create chances and can play in a number of different positions. He was always viewed as a brilliant talent back home in France – Arsenal old-boy Laurent Koscielny even likened him to Lionel Messi back in the day.

The defender told ESPN in October 2016: “Nabil has got huge technical skills. He’s a bit like Messi with his small steps when he runs with the ball in one-on-one.

“He was slowed down a bit with his terrible injury, but he’s slowly coming back to his best level. He’s able to make a difference on the pitch, with a good one-on-one or with an assist or a goal. He’s a young player who needs to be happy in his club and his national team. He’s a very nice guy, so we hope he’ll improve to become a great player.”
