Arsenal are looking to resume contract talks with midfielder, Mohamed Elneny, in the coming weeks, according to reports this evening.

Football.London are reporting that Elneny is in line for a new deal with the club, with just a year of his current contract remaining. They claim that the £5m signing from Basel was approached over fresh terms in April, but nothing has moved on since.

Protection

Arsenal are said to be looking to protect themselves when it comes to the transfer market and Elneny. Although the Egyptian is not firmly in Mikel Arteta’s plans as such for now, the Gunners don’t want to lose him for nothing either.

Edu and Mikel Arteta are still overseeing a major overhaul of players at the club. The signings of Aaron Ramsdale and Martin Odegaard today have taken their spending over the £100m mark this summer. Attentions now, then, are on who can go.

But it seems Elneny is not on that immediate list, with the club clearly keen to get a new contract sorted promptly.

TBR’s View: Wise move, but Elneny every right to sit tight

While not the most spectacular midfielder going, Elneny won’t be short of offers if he does run his contract down. The question really is if anyone will pay him what Arsenal will.

The Gunners are smart to look to tie him down. However, they are playing a risky game and the midfielder might just play the season out.

It’s a busy time for Edu and co. Players are now in the door at least, so there could be time to focus on more in-house decisions.
