Arsenal are ready to show how much faith they have in Mikel Arteta, with The Sun reporting that they will hand him a new contract at the end of the season.

Arteta’s current deal at the Emirates expires next summer. And The Sun reports that he is nowhere near being one of the highest-earning bosses in the Premier League.

He is currently on £5 million per year – a quarter of what Pep Guardiola takes home at Manchester City. The Sun notes that Brendan Rodgers earns twice as much as Arteta.

That is set to change however, with The Sun reporting that Arsenal are ready to hand Arteta a new contract in the summer.

The deal will be worth £25 million over three years. So his pay will rise around 60 percent.

Arsenal handing Arteta new contract makes a lot of sense – even if some doubters remain

Arteta continues to have doubters at the Emirates. And he will come in for plenty of criticism should Arsenal fall short of making the top-four in the Premier League.

However, it is surely fair to say that Arsenal look to have made a smart decision over Arteta.

There is no question that they have made significant progress over the last 12 months. They are not yet good enough to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

But what they have is a raft of players making up a large part of their squad who will come into their peak in the coming years.

And Arteta is central to that. He has his identity as a manager. And the players look to be buying into that. Pep Guardiola previously lauded his incredible work-ethic and special talent.

Judging by the numbers some of his peers are earning, Arsenal are not getting carried away with what they are offering Arteta. And a three-year deal looks to be a reasonable option for both parties.

It looks to be a sensible decision from the Gunners – even if Arteta still has plenty to prove with Arsenal.
