Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has emerged as a transfer target for Benfica.
The proposed move for the Italian fell through due to concerns about his fitness, and the club are now scrambling to try and get a new number one in with 2019/20 only weeks away.
Also on their shortlist is AS Roma’s Robin Olsen.
Mignolet is now firmly established as the number two goalkeeper at Anfield following last year’s signing of Brazilian number one Alisson.
The 26-year-old was a revelation in his first season at Anfield and look set to hold down the position for years to come.
Mignolet, also a target for Crystal Palace (ESPN), would start for a lot of teams in the Premier League and across Europe for that matter.
It would be within his best interests to try and leave the Reds this summer, as he isn’t going to take the jersey off of the world-class Alisson.
The club surely wouldn’t blame the 31-year-old for wanting a new challenge at this point.
That said, the club would be doing well to get someone in as Alisson’s backup who is of the same quality of Mignolet and is happy with the role.
