Mesut Ozil appears to be staking a good claim to make a return to the Arsenal fold, with The Telegraph reporting that the 32-year-old has impressed his teammates with his training performance recently.
Ozil’s situation has been a talking point for some time. The midfielder has not played for the Gunners in any competition this season. He is not registered in either the Premier League or Europa League squads.
With Mikel Arteta’s men enduring a miserable domestic run up until Boxing Day, there had been plenty of debate amongst fans and pundits over whether Ozil should be welcomed back in January.
And it appears that similar debates may have taken place in the Arsenal dressing room.
According to The Telegraph, Arteta’s decision to leave out Ozil has divided the squad. It is suggested that Ozil has the support of some of the senior members of the team.
Interestingly however, the report claims that the former Germany international has impressed his teammates in training in recent times.
TBR View: Ozil may have sensed opportunity
It is not clear how Ozil had been training during the opening weeks of the season. But the report’s claim would suggest that he is now performing better.
Of course, that may have been sparked from a realisation that his exile could last an entire season. But perhaps, he could have also sensed an opportunity.
Arteta’s men ended a run of almost two months without a Premier League win on Boxing Day. During that time, there seemed to be numerous calls for Ozil to get another chance from January.
At some stage, Arteta must have questioned whether he made the right decision.
But with Arsenal producing a much better display against Chelsea on Saturday, it will be very interesting to see whether they can now put a run of form together and what they may mean for Ozil.
